Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: Great communal space and excellent location. Ideal for a large group. We were 8 families, 14 adults and 8 children between ages 1 and 6. Lounge, dining room and play room off the lounge were perfect spaces. Fire doors kept noise to a minimum (except that they slammed when not gently closed) and gave families plenty of privacy when needed. Adam, the caretaker, was responsive and willing to come over to try to remedy problems. Outside space was great for kids, parking for 7 cars comfortably, and walking distance to everywhere worth a visit.
Negative: The whole place needs a lot of love. Primarily the mattresses and beds are not comfortable and one was actually broken. One room had damp and black mould behind the headboard, and the room below it had a damp carpet that almost squidged when you walked on it! The electrics were dodgy in areas, and the surfaces, sofas and carpets were not very clean. It is an old building with old facilities, and the bathrooms could do with updating. One of the showers was broken for the whole time we were there. There was still a bath in that room which was useful for us with so many children, but if we had been a group of just adults then the extra shower would have been necessary. Another shower had no temperature control at all. The heating was inconsistent between rooms, one bedroom was very cold, but an electric heater was provided. For the price point it was a good space, we had a good time and for just 4 days could cope with the poor sleeping conditions. However I do expect a safe and clean environment, whatever price I am paying for accommodation!
